hello. This is Technologytodaynow. Recently, there was news that the Galaxy S25 Edge will be thinner than expected, so we’re taking a closer look.
Galaxy S25 Edge Specifications and Thickness Known So Far

To briefly recap the information about the Galaxy S25 Edge, a slimmer model of the upcoming Galaxy S25 series in the second quarter, it is said to have a battery capacity of 3,900mAh, which is smaller than the base model, with a maximum charging output of 25W, which is lower than the Plus and Ultra models.
Additionally, due to its thinness, the cooling system is somewhat lacking, and it is said to be equipped with a 7-core Snapdragon 8 Elite processor designed for foldable smartphones. Considering that the maximum performance is lower than that of the Galaxy S25 series and the battery capacity is small due to its thinness, it is doubtful whether many consumers will choose the S25 Edge instead of the basic Galaxy S25 model that takes portability, battery performance, and price into account due to its thin design. In particular, with the iPhone 17 Air expected to be 5.5mm thick, the Galaxy S25 Edge, which is 6.4mm thick, is in an awkward position in the thickness competition.
Galaxy S25 Edge Design Change and New Version
However, Samsung may have decided to become less competitive, and it seems that there was a design change that we were not aware of. According to a recent report by Indian IT media outlet SmartFrix, Samsung has chosen one of two versions of the Galaxy S25 Edge to compete with the iPhone 17 Air, which is expected to be released in the second half of the year. The Galaxy S25 Edge was unveiled for the first time at the Galaxy Unpacked event in January, where a physical prototype was also displayed.
Prior to the official announcement, the design of the S25 Edge, which we anticipated, was significantly different from what it looks like today. The initial expected design, similar to the S25 Plus, is said to feature a triple camera setup, but will have thinner thickness than the Plus model. However, the design unveiled at the unpack event looked completely different, similar to the iPhone 16. According to a report by Smartprix, Samsung was working on two versions of the Galaxy S25 Edge.
Why the dual camera version was chosen
One of the two versions was a reduced thickness version of the Plus model with triple cameras that we knew, and the other was a version with a similar design to the iPhone 16, which was unveiled at the Unpacked event. However, with the iPhone 17 Air expected to be released in the second half of the year reportedly measuring 5.5 mm in thickness, the triple camera version was discarded and the dual camera version announced at Unpack was adopted in light of thickness competition.
Thinner Galaxy S25 Edge thickness
Currently, Samsung has not made an official announcement about the thickness of the Galaxy S25, but according to what is known so far, it is expected to be 6.4 mm thick. However, this 6.4 mm is the thickness of the discarded triple-camera version, and the dual-camera version will be thinner than this.
According to SmartFrix, the estimated thickness of the S25 Edge is 5.84 mm. While the triple camera version, which includes the previously known telephoto camera, was 6.4 mm thick, the dual camera version’s prototype, which excludes the telephoto camera unveiled at the venue, was 5.84 mm thick. Slightly thicker than the expected thickness of the iPhone 17 Air of 5.5 mm, the S25 Edge lags behind in the thickness competition between the two products. However, since the S25 Edge comes with an ultra-wide-angle camera added, the likes and likes are likely to vary greatly depending on consumer preferences.
future prospects
I didn’t think it would be an attractive model if it were equipped with a 3,900mAh battery with less than 1mm of thickness as previously known, but if the first digit changes to 5, things will change significantly. Now, not only foldable smartphones but also bar-type smartphones continue to compete for portability and thickness. I’m excited to see how the launch of these slim models will make a difference in the smartphone market.
