According to an exclusive report from a South Korean economic newspaper, Samsung Electronics’ MX division is working on an ultra-slim foldable smartphone. The target is said to be 7 to 8 millimeters, which is nearly half of the Galaxy Z Fold 6’s 12.1 meters. At 7 to 8 millimeters, it’s almost as thick as the Galaxy S 24, and when unfolded, the thickness can be almost 3 millimeters, taking into account the gap in the hinge. At 3mm, it’s only 2mm thinner than the M4 iPad Pro 13-inch, which surprised us with its thickness.
Thickness competition and portress design possibilities
It’s just a 7 to 8 mm goal, which may be far from reality. HONOR’s recently unveiled foldable smartphone, the Magic V3, was 9.2mm thick when folded, 2.9mm thinner than the Galaxy Z Fold 6, and even at 9.2mm thick, the charging port area is almost the same height and thickness as the USB-C. I don’t think it’s possible to be 7 to 8 mm thick with a charging port, but if Samsung is thinking about a port that doesn’t have a charging port in order to reduce the thickness of the foldable smartphone to the extreme, that could be a different story.

The leader in foldable smartphones is the Samsung Galaxy, but the Galaxy lags behind in the thickness race.
