Samsung Develops Ultra-Slim Foldable Phone

hello. This is Technologytodaynow. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 have just been released, but there’s also a lot of interest in the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra. In the meantime, Samsung is reportedly working on an ultra-thin foldable phone that will be even thinner than the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra when it launches this fall.

Samsung is making a winning move due to thickness competition

Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 pre-orders are sluggish

Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 pre-orders are sluggish

It is said that the pre-order box office performance of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 was recorded at 910,000 units, which did not exceed the 920,000 units of the Galaxy Z Fold 3. That’s a far cry from its predecessors, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Flip 5, which sold a record 1.02 million units in pre-orders. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 doesn’t have that many spec changes besides the design and the loss of double storage, which is why pre-order offers have dropped off so much.

Anticipation for the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra model

Another reason for the decline in pre-orders for the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 is the slimmer model.
At the end of the year, Samsung Electronics is planning to release a Galaxy Fold 6 slim model, a tentatively named Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra, which is lighter in weight and thinner in thickness and guarantees the durability of the existing Galaxy G Fold, as in the trend of Chinese foldable smartphones.

Anticipation for the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra model

Since the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra has been announced, I think it may have affected the reservation in advance due to those waiting for the Ultra model instead of the Galaxy Fold 6 regular type. In any case, this slimmer model marks the company’s entry into the thickness race for foldable smartphones, and while the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra is said to be thicker than many Chinese-made foldable smartphones currently on the market, there’s a chance that the next-generation Ultra model could be even thinner than this year’s first-gen offering.

Samsung takes on the ultra-slim foldable smartphone challenge

According to an exclusive report from a South Korean economic newspaper, Samsung Electronics’ MX division is working on an ultra-slim foldable smartphone. The target is said to be 7 to 8 millimeters, which is nearly half of the Galaxy Z Fold 6’s 12.1 meters. At 7 to 8 millimeters, it’s almost as thick as the Galaxy S 24, and when unfolded, the thickness can be almost 3 millimeters, taking into account the gap in the hinge. At 3mm, it’s only 2mm thinner than the M4 iPad Pro 13-inch, which surprised us with its thickness.

Thickness competition and portress design possibilities

It’s just a 7 to 8 mm goal, which may be far from reality. HONOR’s recently unveiled foldable smartphone, the Magic V3, was 9.2mm thick when folded, 2.9mm thinner than the Galaxy Z Fold 6, and even at 9.2mm thick, the charging port area is almost the same height and thickness as the USB-C. I don’t think it’s possible to be 7 to 8 mm thick with a charging port, but if Samsung is thinking about a port that doesn’t have a charging port in order to reduce the thickness of the foldable smartphone to the extreme, that could be a different story.

Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra’s Future Prospects

The leader in foldable smartphones is the Samsung Galaxy, but the Galaxy lags behind in the thickness race.
For now, we’ll have to wait and see how the first-generation Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra model (slim) launches this year to see what direction it takes. However, the Ultra model is expected to be as expensive as its tentative name suggests, so we don’t expect to see many units released.
