According to a post launched on Reddit, an M4 iPad Pro user broke the iPad as they went ahead with the iPad OS 18 update. The user reported that after updating to iPad OS 17.7, he proceeded to update to iPad OS 18, and at some point during the update, his M4 iPad Pro suddenly turned off, and he tried all reset options to no avail. The author of the post also said that when he went to an Apple store, he was told that the iPad was completely bricked. These cases are being reported on domestic community sites as well as internationally.
Relevance to iPad OS 17.7?
Not all M4 iPad Pros are experiencing this issue. Some have reported that their devices malfunctioned after updating from iOS 17.7 to iPad OS 18, but there have also been reports of malfunctions in people who updated directly to iPad OS 18 instead of 17.7, so it doesn’t seem to be a causal relationship. This isn’t something that only occurs with a specific version, but it’s likely a compatibility issue between the M4 iPad Pro itself and OS 18.
Apple’s response
Apple has acknowledged the issue, according to an internal memo from an Apple Authorized Service Provider obtained by MacRumors. The memo mentions that some iPad Pro models were unable to power on after customers attempted to install iPad OS 18. It also mentions that Apple is working to fix the issue, and in the meantime has disabled iPad OS 18 on affected iPad Pro models. However, we don’t know how long it will take for Apple to resolve the issue.
