iPhone 17 Pro design information known so far
Expected to be released in the second half of this year, the iPhone 17 Pro has been tipped to change the position of the secondary microphone, LED flash, and LiDAR sensors from near the lens to the right end, while maintaining a triangular camera setup. There have also been rumors that the design will be changed to have a very large camera bump that covers both the camera lens and the sensors. However, a Bloomberg reporter who is highly confident in the news about Apple noted that the actual design will be different.
iPhone 17 Pro Drawings Leaked
Personally, I think the horizontal layout camera similar to the Pixel 9 is better in design than this giant camera bump. Majin Bu, who is bringing news about Apple, has revealed a CAD drawing that is claimed to be the design of the iPhone 17 series through his Twitter account. The released drawings include one model that maintains the design, two models that change the design, and one that is newly added. From left, they are the iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 base model, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone 17 Pro.
Of course, we can’t be 100% sure of what Majin Bu is telling us. Some argue that the design is not real, but Majin Bu is confident that it is accurate. Also, some famous sources mentioned in China’s Weibo mention that the CAD drawing is very well reproduced.
Changes in iPhone 17 base model camera layout
In the case of the basic iPhone 17 model, the design was changed last year, so the new dual camera arrangement is maintained this time. The iPhone 17 Air, a portable model released instead of the Plus model, has the same design as previously known. Like the iPhone 16e, it is equipped with a single camera, and the camera lens position is almost similar to that of the 16e. However, the secondary microphone and LED flash are located at the right end, and a bar-shaped camera bump is applied that surrounds both the lens and LED flash.
Personally, I expected a neat design with a protruding camera lens like the iPhone 16e, but I think I have a design differentiation in mind from the 16e. Also, the long camera bump looks like a new concept. Still, this design is ambiguous to say it’s weird, but I expect the response to it will change depending on the finish.
iPhone 17 Pro Model Camera Design Change
The following is about the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The triangular camera layout remains unchanged, but the positions of the LED flash and LiDAR sensor have been moved to the right edge, and a large camera bump that encloses all elements has been adopted. Additionally, the diagram partially shows the bottom of the camera in red. According to rumors leaked last year about the iPhone 17 Pro, it was mentioned that the entire frame would be made of aluminum instead of titanium, and only the bottom part with wireless charging and MagSafe magnets would be made of glass.
This appears to indicate where the glass material will be used. There were rumors that the reverse wireless charging feature, which was first installed on Huawei’s Mate XT, would also be used on iPhones, but the bottom seems to be made of glass for wireless charging. It’s unclear whether this design will actually be applied, but if it is, it seems to mean that Apple doesn’t want to give up the benefits of the camera’s triangular layout.
Conclusion
The advantage of the triangular arrangement is that the lenses are gathered as close together as possible, so the center does not shift significantly even when the lens is changed.
