hello. This is Technologytodaynow. Samsung’s patent for the Galaxy Rollable Smartphone has been made public. Let’s take a closer look at the related news.
Samsung Galaxy Rollable Smartphone Patent Unveils

As LG failed to release a rollable smartphone and withdrew from the smartphone business, it has become impossible to purchase a rollable smartphone in Korea. Currently, foldable smartphones from overseas manufacturers are not officially released in Korea, so it is expected that it will take more time for domestic consumers to purchase a rollable smartphone. However, data that allows us to take a look at the rollable smartphone that Samsung Electronics is developing has been released. However, it is completely different from the form of the petition we expected.
Unexpected Rollable Smartphones Unveiled Through Patents
On April 15, Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy Rollable Smartphone patent, which was registered with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, was unveiled. Unlike the Galaxy Fold, which is commonly thought of as a rollable smartphone, the rollable smartphone in this patent has a vertical display that is similar to the Galaxy Flip, a clamshell foldable phone that folds vertically rather than in the form of an appeal that combines a smartphone and a tablet PC.
This type of rollable smartphone is similar to the previous prototype of the rollable smartphone unveiled at Lenovo Tech World 2022, but there is a difference between the two. Lenovo’s prototype can be seen maintaining the smartphone’s display ratio even when it is not unfolded, and Samsung’s registered rollable phone seems to have a display ratio similar to that of an MP3 player or bicycle rather than a smartphone.
Samsung’s Rollable Display Technology Unveiled at CES 2025
However, only the patent has been registered with this ratio, and the actual product to be released may not have this ratio. The name of Samsung Display’s vertical rollable display that was unveiled at CES 2025 held earlier this year is ‘Sliderable Flex Vertical’, and the prototype has a 5.1-inch size and 16:9 ratio when unfolded, and a 6.7-inch size and 22:9 ratio display when unfolded.
This product is a different form factor from the rollable phone in the patent. Incidentally, a horizontal rollable display was also unveiled at CES. This prototype, called the ‘Slider Flex Duet’, is named ‘Duet’ because it rolls up from both sides rather than just one side. When unfolded, it has a size of 8.1 inches with a 4:3 aspect ratio, and when unfolded, it has a size of 12.4 inches with a 21:9 aspect ratio.
Rollable Smartphone Patent Design Features
If you look at designs other than the display, it has an angled frame on the side, similar to the current iPhone and Galaxy S, and the front display has a thick bezel at the bottom of the chin. However, the actual models shown in the prototype didn’t have a separate bottom jaw. There is a step difference in the unfolded part, and if you look at the expected design based on this patent, we applied two colors using the step difference. This design reminds me of the design of the old Galaxy Flip or the design of the past iPhone 5. I’m really curious about the future.
