hello. This is Technologytodaynow. With the iPhone 16 launch now two months away, a lot of material has been released. In the U.S., the three-year carrier contracts of our most popular iPhone 13 series users are ending this year, so it’s a good time to consider whether to upgrade to the iPhone 16 directly or to the iPhone 17 later. Here’s a quick recap of the iPhone 17 design, chipset, display, and other news we’ve seen so far.
Summary of iPhone 17 news before iPhone 16 release
iPhone 17 120HZ Screen Scanning Rate
One of the parts that many iPhone regular users evaluate as regrettable in iPhone displays while enjoying games is the screen scan rate. Apple was the first to apply it to the iPad Pro lineup after announcing Apple Promotion technology, a variable scan rate technology, at WWDC 17 and has since been installed in the iPhone Pro lineup since the iPhone 13 Pro series. This is something that many casual users have been waiting for, and Apple is expected to bring the technology to its regular model lineup starting with the iPhone 17 series. Especially since the promotional displays will be power efficient and will likely have always-on capabilities, it’s a good idea to consider them if you’re a gamer.
iPhone 17 display size
Starting with the iPhone 16 Pro series, the screen size is said to increase to 6.27 inches for the iPhone 16 Pro and 6.86 inches for the iPhone 16 Pro Max, and the iPhone 17 series is said to have a larger display size for the regular model as well, so those who prefer a slightly larger screen may want to consider the iPhone 17. Additionally, the iPhone 17 is said to have a new anti-reflective layer that is scratch-resistant.
iPhone 17 camera
According to Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone 17 Pro Max is expected to feature a 48MP camera, while the current iPhone 15 Pro model has a 48MP main camera and a 12MP ultra-wide-angle, telephoto camera. The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models will upgrade to 48MP, including the ultra-wide-angle camera, and the iPhone 17 Pro Max will upgrade all cameras to 48MP, so if you’re a heavy camera user, you may want to consider this. The iPhone 17 series is also promising an upgrade to a 24MP front-facing camera, so if you take a lot of selfies, you might want to wait for the iPhone 17.
iPhone 17 design
With the M4 iPad Pro coming in at a thinner design than the previous model, many are expecting the iPhone to get thinner as well, with the iPhone Plus model expected to be replaced by the iPhone 17 Slim model in the iPhone 17. It’s expected to be roughly 2% thinner than its predecessor, and DSCC CEO Ross Young said the iPhone 17 Plus (Slim) model will have a display that shrinks to 6.55 inches.
iPhone 17 chipset
TSMC 2-nanometer process chipsets are expected to start with the A19 in the iPhone 17. The chipset will first appear in the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, and is expected to enter pre-production later this year. Apple recently agreed to a supply price increase to keep TSMC chipsets in stock.
So far, we’ve covered the iPhone 17 design, chipset, display, and more. While we know that Apple will be heavily promoting the iPhone 16 seriesfor the use of Apple Intelligence, advanced features like Siri’s on-device contextual awareness, screen recognition, and application controls will be available in the U.S. first in 2025 in English only, so we strongly recommend that you do yourself a favor and plan your iPhone 16 and 17 purchases accordingly.
